Protecting Stadiums - Liberty Swansea AFC
Posted on 8th January 2020 at 16:58
Project Background
Liberty Stadium, Swansea is the premier venue for conference and events in South West Wales. With the capacity to hold 21,000 spectators it is also the home of Swansea City Football Club and the Ospreys regional rugby team.
Following advice received from joint parties including the police, anti-terror and local authorities Swansea City approached Cova to provide a hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) solution for their stadium.
Client Requirement
Swansea City were tasked with securing their North Access Ramp around the perimeter of the stadium. Whilst they required a high secure HVM crash rated product, a key factor was that there was no electrical power on the approach to the ramp so required a simple, safe operational HVM solution.

Client Feedback
Gordon David, Building & Facilities Manager commented “The Cova CSG manual barrier was the obvious choice from operation to appearance and is an added addition to the safe operation of traffic movement around the stadium perimeter.
The barrier is a simple solution that allows an easy manual operation from open to fully closed when in use and can be locked open or closed by the use of a locking pin, this is essential as there are no electrical services at the location.”
Project Highlights
Karen Deacon, Cova Marketing Manager
“This was a unique opportunity to demonstrate how bespoke and innovative we are by adding their iconic black ‘Swan’ logo to both sides of the gates.
So, even though it’ll provide a high level of protection, due to the white finish and corporate branding it’s still able to blend in with its surroundings.
In the past 3 years we’ve seen the demand for HVM products from stadiums almost double around the world. Liberty Stadium adds to installations we’ve also completed at Adelaide Oval, Canberra Stadium and Twickenham Stadium, the home of Rugby Union and we've many more in the pipeline for 2020.”
