Meet Robyn

Meet Robyn our very FIRST female Service Engineer who celebrates her 3 month anniversary at Cova this week, just as it coincides with International Women In Engineering Day (#INWED @WES1919 @INWED1919).
If you didn’t know the world celebrates 100 years of the W.E.S (Women Engineering Society) today, 23rd June 2019.
Recent publications have highlighted that the engineering profession still has a long way to go to overcome its challenge of attracting and retaining female engineers.
This ‘hands on’ role for Robyn is unique in the perimeter security industry as it’s usually expected to be undertaken by men as it requires engineering experience as well as physical strength being mainly on the road travelling around the UK as part of our Field Service team conducting a wide range of gate, barrier and road blocker installations as well as supporting our service and maintenance teams conducting routine checks and tests on Cova’s products and on other manufacturers perimeter security equipment.
We asked Robyn to share a little insight into her background and her passion for engineering and how her weekend hobby and interest in cars developed into her career in engineering.
“Having completing my BTEC, NVQ and HNC in Electrical/Electronic Engineering at college, and with no work experience under my belt, I found a role within a small team in a car conversion company, who transform vehicles to the emergency services which was great, but I felt that I needed a more challenging role.”
She moved on to join global company Thales Group as a Test & Repair Apprentice in their Training and Simulation Department, in Electronic/Electrical Engineering and remained there for 4 years.
Robyn explained “Over time at Thales, I gained valuable experience in installing Full Flight Simulators from core drilling for the jacks, all the way up to manufacturing and installing wiring systems, fault finding and system checking. I was lucky enough to get involved with technical publications, manufacturing, assembly, machining, electrical and mechanical engineering.
Some of my tasks involved included wiring, machining, heavy lifting, cabinet installations, network wiring, power writing earthing, crimping and wire rapping – so I was always busy and it was during this time I really developed my passion for this side of engineering!”
Robyn also worked on site to assist the team with installations of full flight and smaller flat panel trainers and worked on cockpit control boxes – testing and repairing them.
After completing her apprenticeship in electrical/electronic engineering, Robyn wanted to find a role to continue to develop her understanding of electrical components and to gain practical skills and useful knowledge – and this is where is she joined Cova in March to further her career.
“Every day at Cova is different and so is every perimeter security product, and this is what continues to make automated gate, barriers and road blocker engineering interesting and exciting. When not on site with clients I try to spend time with our Design Team and in our Factory to learn more.”
Robyn continues to further her career by putting herself through evening classes at college to gain a Level One Certificate in welding and in intends to further this by achieving a Level 2 Certificate after, fully supported by Cova.
Outside of work you can usually find Robyn still in her garage fixing up one of her many cars and by day she continues to champion Women in Engineering.
