Protecting Stations - Birmingham New Street
Posted on 16th June 2018 at 17:09
Project Background
Network Rail owns, operates and develops Britain’s railway infrastructure - including signalling, bridges, level crossings and key stations throughout the UK.
Birmingham New Street is the largest and busiest of three main stations and is the central hub of the British Rail Network in the city centre.
New Street is the 5th busiest station in the UK and with over 7 million passengers changing trains at the station annually in 2014/15 it underwent a £550 million redevelopment, to include a brand new concourse, a new exterior facade, new entrance on Stephenson Street as well as upgrading it's perimeter security with a range of hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) products.
Client Requirement
In November 2014 the main contractor for the project redevelopment approached Cova for drawings, product and technical information along with a quotation for 6 crash tested shallow depth road blockers to protect their service yard located at the back of the station.
The entrance and exit is located under the station, at road level so the requirement was to mitigate any risk of a vehicle attack.

Project Highlights
Bob Brooker - Cova Head of Design
“Working closely with the main contractor was critical key for our internal Project Team to ensure that all 6 shallow depth road blockers were installed within the specific swift 2 week window deadline we were provided, to ensure minimal disruption to the stations service yard.
Additionally, our Electrical Design Engineer worked closely with the client to agree a bespoke operational philosophy in which they needed to be able to operate all 6 blockers independently, in addition to integrating them into their existing traffic control security systems.”
