Cova Security Gates' Undergrads

One of Cova Security Gates’ core values is to invest and support our employees in their professional growth. That's why we are sponsoring Ali, Aidan, and Tom, in pursuing a work-based engineering degree program. These individuals are balancing the demands of full-time work with the academic rigor of pursuing a degree, and we are thrilled to support them on this journey. 

 

The trio are no strangers to work, life and study balance. Ali and Aidan previously completed a level 5 HND in mechanical engineering fully funded by Cova while Tom completed a level 5 HND in electrical and electronic engineering, self-funded before joining the business in late 2019. 

 

Starting in 2013, Ali began his career with Cova Security Gates in finance. Since then, he has expanded his expertise and business knowledge in various areas of the company, including purchasing, final assembly fitting, and design. His ability to adapt to different roles is a testament to his versatility and determination to grow within the company. Ali currently works as a design and projects engineer, collaborating closely with clients to develop customised solutions that align with their unique requirements. 

 

Aidan joined our team in 2018, as an engineering apprentice before his promotion to production assistant and then production engineer. Day-to-day, Aidan assists our production manager in bridging the gap between our design and production departments. Aidan has a diverse set of responsibilities, from ordering parts and services, reporting and documenting issues as well as research and development to streamline our manufacturing process. Aidan's expertise in software coding and proficiency with various CAD packages make him a valuable asset to our team. He plays a crucial role in optimising our workflows, and can often be found working diligently with these software tools. 

 

Tom is one of our electrical design engineers, who drafts electrical control drawings, PLC programs and oversees factory acceptance tests for our range of products. He works closely with clients to understand their unique requirements, and utilises his extensive knowledge and passion for electrical design and automation to make the project vision, reality. Tom originally joined Cova as an electrical control panel technician but within a few months, he was promoted to the electrical design engineer position. 

 

Ali, Aidan, and Tom are currently pursuing their work-based engineering degrees at Portsmouth University, which spans over a period of two years. The program requires a total of 360 credits for graduation, out of which their HNDs contribute to 240 credits. To earn the remaining 120 credits, each of them is required to carry out work-related research projects. The projects were jointly determined by the students and Cova prior to their commencement.
